Google.org Launches $20M AI Challenge for Global Science

The Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Science is an ambitious global initiative inviting nonprofits, civil society organizations, academic researchers, and social enterprises to submit innovative proposals on how artificial intelligence can accelerate scientific discovery. Launched by Google.org, this open call aims to harness AI's transformative power to address critical global issues and advance progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The challenge is underpinned by Google's commitment to leveraging AI for social good, recognizing its capacity to not only solve problems faster but also unlock unprecedented possibilities for discovery and scalability across various scientific domains.
Selected organizations will receive significant support, including a share of $20 million in funding, invaluable mentorship from Google AI experts, and pro bono assistance from the Google.org Accelerator. Furthermore, participants will gain access to cutting-edge Google products and computing resources, such as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), empowering them to push the boundaries of AI application in science. The initiative highlights AI's proven potential, citing examples like its role in predicting extreme weather events and facilitating the development of new medicines, demonstrating how it is already revolutionizing approaches to pressing global challenges.
Google.org is particularly interested in projects that focus on three key areas. Firstly, proposals that advance fundamental scientific understanding are encouraged, such as using AI to discover novel materials, unravel complex biological systems, or model intricate astrophysical phenomena. Secondly, the challenge seeks solutions that directly address pressing societal challenges, including accelerating climate action, enhancing public health outcomes, or safeguarding biodiversity. Lastly, a crucial focus is on promoting responsible AI development, ensuring that all AI applications are created and utilized ethically, transparently, and inclusively to benefit all of humanity.
