WordPress.com Integrates MCP for Smarter AI Site Management

WordPress.com has introduced support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard designed to bridge the gap between AI assistants and WordPress sites. Traditionally, managing WordPress sites involved manual tasks like logging into dashboards, checking stats, and copying data for AI analysis. MCP eliminates this by allowing AI assistants like Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor to securely connect directly to WordPress.com, providing LLMs with real-time context about a site's content, analytics, and settings.

This integration offers significant benefits, primarily streamlining workflows. Users can now simply ask their AI assistant questions like, “Show me my latest posts and how they’re performing,” or “Run a comprehensive health check across all my WordPress.com sites,” receiving instant, data-driven answers without needing to log into multiple dashboards. This consolidates site content, data, and insights within the AI tool, fostering a more efficient and focused management experience.

Security is a core aspect of MCP, which is “secure by design.” Access is facilitated via OAuth, ensuring nothing is stored locally, and users retain full control to connect or disconnect their AI assistant at any time. Initially, MCP provides “read-only” access, enabling AI to securely surface information and insights. Future updates are planned to include “write” access, expanding the assistant's capabilities. WordPress.com is the first WordPress host to implement MCP with OAuth by default, making it available for all sites on paid plans. Examples of its utility include instantly getting performance insights for posts, receiving prioritized action plans for site health issues, and summarizing comments across multiple sites. This innovation allows users to leverage AI where they already work, transforming site management into a more intuitive and integrated process.
