Ethereum’s Future: Stagnation or 1000x Scaling?

Ethereum researcher Dankrad Feist warns of Ethereum’s potential irrelevance within the next decade unless drastic scaling improvements are implemented. Feist’s concern centers on maintaining Ethereum’s Layer 1 (L1) as the economic core, fearing that the proliferation of Layer 2 (L2) solutions could siphon off liquidity and render L1 less significant. He advocates for a shift from Ethereum’s historical incrementalism to a more aggressive, goal-oriented approach, advocating for hard-coded targets and a clear timeline for upgrades. These upgrades would involve advancements like delayed execution, shorter slot times, parallel transaction execution, and improved censorship resistance mechanisms like FOCIL (Friendly Optimizations for Censorship-resistant Infrastructure Layers). Feist acknowledges concerns that this high-throughput approach might transform Ethereum into a ‘datacenter chain,’ but counters that the core value proposition is verifiability and censorship resistance, not the home staker. He believes that zero-knowledge proofs will facilitate trust-minimized usage and that mechanisms like FOCIL can improve censorship resistance. Feist concludes that maintaining Ethereum’s significant DeFi liquidity and network effects from L1 proximity, along with a massive scaling upgrade, will solidify its competitive edge.
