Google and Internet2 have launched the Internet2 NET+ Google AI Education Leadership Program (ELP), a collaborative initiative empowering higher education institutions to strategically integrate artificial intelligence. This program equips university leaders with the knowledge and tools to develop comprehensive AI strategies, fostering responsible and equitable AI adoption across campuses. The ELP helps institutions navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape, harnessing its potential to enhance learning, research, and operational efficiencies.
A primary benefit is unparalleled access to Google's cutting-edge AI expertise, resources, platforms, including Google Cloud AI and Gemini. This collaboration allows universities to experiment with and pilot new AI applications, from personalized learning and advanced research to streamlining administrative tasks. Internet2 contributes its secure network and community framework, facilitating knowledge sharing among peer institutions. The program fosters a collaborative environment for leaders to co-create solutions, preparing students for an AI-driven future workforce and ensuring ethical AI development in education.
While emphasizing benefits, the program implicitly addresses potential challenges and risks of AI integration, such as ethical implications like algorithmic bias, data privacy, and academic integrity. The ELP’s focus on responsible adoption aims to mitigate these risks, promoting digital equity and accessibility. Its structure, involving workshops, technical support, and Cloud credits, supports institutions through complex implementations, helping them define policies and best practices for AI governance.
The inaugural cohort includes ten diverse institutions like Duke University, Indiana University, and the University of Washington. These institutions will engage in a structured program focused on developing concrete AI strategies and piloting innovative applications. Through this collaborative leadership program, Google and Internet2 are setting a precedent for how higher education can responsibly and effectively embrace AI to transform the future of learning and discovery.
